As south african as it gets.
MY BRU was born from a love of good food, good beer, and good company with roots that stretch from the sunny shores of Durban to the rugged coastline of Cornwall. I grew up in Durban, South Africa, where the ocean, surf culture, and social life were a huge part of everyday living. Around 2005, I started making biltong for myself and my friends using a small homemade wooden drying box that could handle about 10kg at a time.
The recipe came from an old family tradition, passed down through my cousin, a butcher back in South Africa. What began as a hobby quickly became a passion refining flavours, perfecting texture, and sharing it with anyone who appreciated proper biltong. In 2016, my wife and I immigrated to the UK and quickly embraced the British lifestyle pubs, rugby, and the social culture that brings people together over a pint.
In 2023, we made the move to Cornwall. Coming from Durban, where surf life shaped so much of who I am, Cornwall felt like home almost instantly. The coastline, the energy, and the community mirrored that same sense of freedom and connection I grew up with. As we explored both the North and South Cornish coasts, visiting local breweries and taprooms, an idea began to form.
In South Africa, a good pint and some sport pair perfectly with biltong and drywors (Droewors) and there was no reason that couldn't work just as well here. That's how MY BRU was born. MY BRU blends South African tradition with Cornwall's finest beef to create air-dried snacks made for sharing with a pint. From biltong and drywors to boerewors, everything we make is rooted in heritage, crafted with care, and designed to sit comfortably in pubs, taprooms, and rugby clubs wherever good people gather. At its heart, MY BRU is about bringing people together: where the Duchy meets Mzansi, where surf meets sport, and where tradition meets a proper British pint.
